Recycling takes place as follows:
Expanded polystyrene is reduced in volume using methods such as solvent volume reduction (dissolved using solvent), heating volume reduction (melted by heating) and pulverizing volume reduction (pulverized). The processed expanded polystyrene is used in its reduced state as an ingredient for recycled products, or it is burnt to generate heat energy.
